Malaysian Smes To Increase Usage Of E-Commerce
The SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp) anticipates nearly 22% SMEs in Malaysia to go global this year, as compared to 19% recorded in 2005. Datuk Hafsah Hashim, CEO of the SME Corp, is hopeful that the expected increase in the number of SMEs going online would lead to growth in the adoption of e-commerce by small businesses. With the help of e-commerce, SMEs in Malaysia can conduct online trading transactions with ease rather than going for conventional modes of business transaction. After inking a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with eBay and PayPal, Ms Hashim also revealed figures that showed an increase in Web penetration among small businesses in Malaysia over the last few years. As per Ms Hashim, only 53% out of the 92% of the small businesses in Malaysia, which have access to the Internet, have their own websites. Ms Hashim further revealed that merely 3% of small businesses, out of the 53%, with their own webpages conduct full trading online. However, most of them stop online transaction when they reach the quotation stage and starts receiving requests for invoice. Speaking about the agreement signed between the SME Corp, eBay and PayPal, Ms Hashim stated that the collaboration would make it easy for micro enterprises in the rural areas to carry out business-to-consumer (B2C) trading.
