Most Common Mistakes Job Applicants Do in Resume Writing

Avoiding mass mailing your resume

A typical job applicant tends to mass mail her or his resume to many companies. It is one of the most common mistakes done by most job applicants. One should never wish to throw many stones into job market and hope to get a job. Instead, the job applicant should choose the company he or she wish to work and the position one aiming, and prepare the resume or modify the existing resume specifically targeting the corporate and the job.

Gathering relevant and important information

Further, the job applicant must conduct extensive research about the company one is seeking the job and see what works and what does not. Modify and update resume with the information gathered from the research. Create a powerful sales letter like resume that specifically targets the company and that makes the candidate an irresistible job applicant to a manager that reads your resume. Further, do not forget to write a covering letter that targets the hiring manager in a given company.

Writing a customized covering letter

Covering letter should read like an executive summary. Typically, an executive summary provides an outline or the overview to the reader of a report.  Nevertheless, do not be repetitive and try to give information that is not part of your resume. For example, you can elaborate your people skills, oratory or communication skills, or leadership skill that is a necessity for the job you are applying.

Creating a interest in the hiring manager

The more you know about the company and the job, more targeted, and specific you covering letter can become. Just imagine how many applications a company manager would be getting Moreover, the manager typically assesses the job applicants based on his her first reading of the covering letter. Indeed, the covering letter bridges or brings the curious manager to read the rest of resume with interest. In other words, you are creating an interest in the covering letter.

Unless you differentiate with hundreds of other job applicants, your chance to create an outstanding impression and to get a job is slim. Create a customized resume for each company you approach and treat each resume as critical and as important to land in your desired job.

AM I the Only One that Refuses to write boring resume’s?

Sure, I get practically NO response back, but I refuse to submit boring, same-old type resumes.

My hope is that someone will appreciate a candidate with the balls to try to think outside the box; the reality is that no one in corporate America has either balls or creativity.

Damn my non-conformist attitude, anyway!!!

I tried that too. It only worked for me because I ended up as the only candidate with any experience. I was over qualified, but took the job. I don’t think it was my creative resume. After a while, I re-wrote it to be more “normal.”

You may be a bit right about corporate America having little creativity. But they’re looking for someone who will fit into their organization. Your creativity can come into play once you’re in the door.

I commend your non-conformist attitude, but the key is to be a chameleon. You can be creative, and still conform to traditional resume writing styles.

It all boils down to: what do you want, and how can you get it? If your resume style isn’t working, figure out what’s more important to you- adhering to your style choice or getting an interview?

If you want the job, think about what they’d like to hear from a candidate, and give it to them. Get hired, then unleash your creative side. They have a comfort zone and a pile of resumes that don’t make them raise their eyebrows. You need creativity to make your resume shine and stand out among the rest, but don’t over do it.

You need to find some middle ground. There’s lots of middle ground between “boring” and “weird.”

I don’t know what kinds of jobs you’re applying for, nor what your resume looks like, so this is just some generic advice. I’d be interested to see exactly what you’re talking about.
