Answering the whys of corporate clothing

It is quite common to find that the organizations prescribe some kind of dress code for their employees. This dress code could be loosely termed in the form of some guidelines or instructions so as to impart greater room to employees for making a selection. It can also be very strict stipulation which has to be adhered to by the employees, not giving them any room of making choices whatsoever. Corporate clothing could also be casual or formal. There are organizations who do not mind their employees come in comfortable casual clothing. Some others might want their employees to wear only the formal wear during their duty hours. So, there is a lot of variation to be found in different types and categories of corporate wear.

Why do organizations want their employees to wear the pre-determined corporate uniforms or corporate clothing? There could be many reasons for the same. Some of these could be:

1. Maintain uniformity in clothing for a particular set of employees: There could be many reasons which would warrant maintaining a need for uniformity in clothing. This could be because of the company does not want some employees to dress up expensively while for some others it might be a luxury which they can not afford.

2. Maintain distinctiveness in clothing among different set of employees: Although uniformity is desirable among the employees there has to be visual difference between the different levels of the employees. Therefore, the corporate clothing might be required to be different for different levels of employees.

3. When it is not possible to procure the material of the clothing easily: Some of the organizations might be providing speciality fabric as corporate wear and this might not be possible to get these easily by everyone. So, it is the company which might need to get these made on its own and as per its own specifications and requirements.

4. Branding: This is one of the most important reasons why the companies want to get the corporate uniforms developed for their employees. The companies would like to get their brand identity established in the eyes of the public in general and the visitors who come to visit company in particular.

5. Inculcating a sense of belongingness and loyalty among the employees towards the organization. Corporate uniforms could be one of the means of achieving this objective. The employees feel pride in wearing these and in being a part of a reputed organization.

Companies can order for their clothing from the sellers of promotional clothing. They can even get their brand elements like the logo and graphic design printed or embroidered on these. The sellers might be providing both casual and formal clothing and that too for both the men and women. Even the sizes could be specified as per the standards. But, there are some companies which order for the fabric only and the stitching of clothing or uniform is done as per the custom sizes.

Ive been at my job for 4 years. lets start by saying my position has stayed the same but alot of old managers gave me alot of responsibility cause they saw something in me. this woman has been at my job for a half year. shes made my life hell. she talks very badly bout me as a worker and my personal life to everyone. she talks to me badly when asked to do something. she always picks on me for my uniform more than anyone else. she leaves messes for me she seen the night before but doesnt clean and lets it wait for me. my she was in a managers meeting and i found out she said that i have way to much power and that it needs to be taken away. so now everything ive earned has been taken away. i cant go to corporate because they are never confidential and people become blacklisted. i cant obviously say anything to her cause shes unreasonable. but i am upset and i dont want her to see me defeated or affected by her crap even though i am. i cant quit cause i need the money. please help

I deal with workplace issues every day, you don’t say what sort of a business you work in. Do you have a Trade Union, I guess not otherwise they wouldn’t be able to treat you this way. No one has had the decency to tell you why you have had the duties taken away from you, and she seems to have a very strong personality if she has persuaded the other bosses to do this to you. There must be someone higher than you that you can go to, firstly I would approach it by saying that throught the 4 years you’ve been there you’ve been given responsibilities because you’ve proved yourself to be a hard worker, and you would like to know why these have been taken away from you, and while you are chatting you could mention how you feel you are treated by her, but if this is going to backfire on you, don’t mention it. Do you have a contract of employment, does your company have a “Standards of Behaviour” policy?

As you say you need your job, and without a union or a boss on your side, unfortunately there’s little that you can do I’m afraid. Sorry.
