how do i connect a linksys wireless router with a modem thats a modem/wireless router combo. i only have laptp?

My modem router combo is supplied by my company and have to use it for corporate laptop but I am trying to connect a personal laptop to the wireless router. I have purchased an additional router and can’t seem to get the whole process to work. I have a dsl line from phone jack to corporate router/modem, that connects to the docking station for my corporate laptop via ethernet cord. Now that computer can function wired on the docking station or wireless throughout the house. How do I setup my personal computer also since I don’t have a separate modem? I am not very Computer savvy, so the more basic, the better!!

You don’t need a second router even.

One wireless router can connect multiple devices. It’s best to ask your IT department, since they probably have it secured with WPA security and a MAC filter. To change the settings to allow your personal laptop would require some tech savvy.

The Linksys could probably be directly connected to the connected to the other router. But if they turned off the DHCP function, you’ll need a bit of tech savvy to assign a manual IP address. If it’s just a Wireless AP and DSL modem, you’d need to configure the Linksys to use the PPPoE most DSL providers use.

I wouldn’t recommend connecting a linksys router and leaving it unsecured (default state). At best, you could open yourself up to internet leeching… at worst identity theft.

In short, call your IT department or your DSL provider for assistance. It may be more complicated than just plug and play.
